Choose the number of courses wisely at a boarding school

Most of us send our children to the best boarding schools in the hopes for them to pick up best table manners, prim and preppy etiquettes, fluency in foreign languages and zillion other traits. Most schools allow students to take up co-curricular activities that can polish a child’s personality. This can get a parent tempted to push their child to choose as many courses as he can and make the most of his stay. However, what we forget in this course is that they are still children, just the decision of letting them study at residential schools in India instead of normal day schools haven’t transformed them into super humans. They still are kids with their set of limitations, distractions and mood swings, hostel life may just add a little discipline and time management skills to their life.

Counsellors say that it is a common problem for parents whose wards are under institutional care to become over expectant of their child’s capacity. When parents don’t get the opportunity to witness the day to day activity of their children, they may tend to lose track of how hectic and tiring things can be for them, says a child welfare counsellor at a premium residential school in India. Consequentially, they can continue to push children to take up more courses and perform better in the ones they have already enrolled for. This not only creates an unnecessary pressure on children, but it affects their performance and health as well. Their whole growing process can get impeded due to rising stress levels which are a result of unrealistic expectations of parents

Hence, it is important for them to understand that the best boarding schools India already plan a routine which is well occupied and strikes the perfect balance between academics, physical activity and relaxation. It is unwise to force your child to take up more activities than he can handle, just because he is at a school wherein the facilities are available. Instead of making him a jack of all trades but master of none, allow him to choose a few courses of his interest and master them.
